Grandmaster Larry Evans, one of America's most celebrated chess authorities ever since he first captured the nation's highest title at age 19, is a 5-time USA champion and author of 25 chess books including New Ideas in Chess, Chess Catechism, and a collaboration on Bobby Fischer's classic My 60 Memorable Games. For Cardoza, Evans has recently authored 10 Most Common Chess Mistakes. He is a longtime contributor to Chess Life , and his national syndicated chess column, Evans On Chess, has appeared continuously since 1971. Evans has beaten or drawn against six world champions; Euwe, Karpov, Petrosian, Spassky, Smyslov, and Fischer, as well as dozens of the worlds’ top players.
Evans won the Marshall Club Championship at 15 and the New York State Championship at 16. He then conquered the closed USA Championship 5-times (the first time in 1951, the last time in 1980, a remarkable span), the USA Open 4-times, and the 1956 Canadian Open, as well as many opens over the years plus first place at an international tournament in Portugal 1974. Evans also represented the USA on eight Olympic teams (including the gold medal team in 1976) and served as captain in 1982.
Evans was the youngest player to capture the nation's highest chess title at age 19, a record surpassed only by Bobby Fischer at 15. He is sometimes referred to as the dean of American chess.
